Ma-Ke Bonsai Studio was established as a business in 2007 but it has grown out of my life long affair with Bonsai.
I was introduced to Bonsai in the mid 80's, when I bought a couple of Ficus trees at a local club exhibition in India. My passion for Bonsai has been growing ever since and has now become a Way of Life for me.
As a keen gardner I started propagating Bonsai from clippings taken from my Bonsai. My Collection collection started growing as did the numbers of species that I trained. My exposure to various species grew as my works posted me around from city to city and from one country to another. Back then, Bonsai was still quite a private art in most countries, and not much local Bonsai information was available. Each region, country and species therefore presented its own learning challenges. I often found that even if I had grown a species for a while, moving to a new region or country invariable meant I had to learn to train the same species all over again and adapt it to local condition, climates, water and resources. To help me keep track of my learning and findings I started a Bonsai database, which now forms the framework of the Bonsai Care Guide.
I finally set roots in the UK in the early 90's, and was glad to discover that Bonsai had quite a following here. An extended visit to Peter Chan's Herons Nursery, helped me re-start my 'collection' of trees. I also started collecting and propagating Native UK and European species. I soon found I had hundreds of Bonsai, most of them grown from seed and cutting.
Bonsai has over the years given me a lot of peace and solace in an otherwise a busy and demanding work life. I believe the Art of Bonsai is still not as popular as it should be, and unfortunately, it is still looked upon as a hobby and pursuit for the affluent.
Our mission at Ma-Ke Bonsai is to spread the Art of Bonsai to a wider audience, as I believe it is therapeutic, stress busting and just lots of fun. I would like to see Bonsai for Everyone.
