Bonsai Tree Species Guide

The Species Guide presents a Species of Plants that are suitable as Bonsai. The tree list is continualy growing and currently there are nearly a 100 or so species listed here.

The Bonsai Species Guide has been arranged in a number of ways to assist you with locating the species that you are need:

  1. Scientific Name (or Botonical Name) is often the only accurate way of naming and recognising trees accross regions, national boundaries and languages.
  2. Common Name. Which can lead to quite a lot of confusion, but often you only have the Common Name. Use this list and the ID information to help identify the species that you have or are after.
  3. Indoor Bonsai Species - a selection of Tropical/Semi-tropical trees that will grow indoors in the more Temperate parts of the world, provided you can ensure they get the required amounts of light, heat water and humidity.
  4. Conifers - These mainly hardy species do well in the Temperate Parts of the World.
  5. Broadleaf Species - both decidious and everygreen, with varied leaf sizes and colour, and often with flaboyamnt displays of flowers and colour.
  6. Flowering Bonsai - Species of Trees that can make for exquisite flowering Bonsai.
  7. Bonsai by Region - Select your region and the Species Guide will Present you with species that are suitable to grow in you region. Currently only avaiable for the UK.

My experience of growing Bonsai has lead me believe that to be able to grow a species to its highest potential, a rounded and holistic understanding of the species is required. In that respect myBonsaiGuide goes beyond conventional Bonsai Species guides and includes a detailed Sections on Taxonomy, Propagation and Cultivation for each species, along with the Bonsai Care Section.

For the beginner, my suggestion is to, start at the Bonsai Care Section, it presents guidelines to Caring for your Bonsai. Thereafter you can migrate to the other sections, as you develop your understanding and confidence in looking after you trees.

This Bonsai Guide has been written and researched primarily from the perspective, of the UK and mainly for Zones 8 and 9 in the UK. You may need to make adjustment for your local climates and situations.
