Mă-Kè Bonsai News
Happy News Years!
December was mild, and many of us were in two minds abou the eternal question of protecting our Bonsai verses letting our Bonsai face the chill, thereby helping them harden of and perform better in the comming year.
Cold weather, particularly frost, causes the water in plant cells to freeze, damaging the cell wall. Even hardy evergreen plants, can have truble with prolonged cold spells and frost. Frost problems are often made worse where Bonsais directly face the morning sun, as this causes them to defrost rapidly, rupturing their cell walls. It is best in the months of January and February to protect our beloved bonsai and potted plants. A cool green house is idea, if not if you have a small muber of Bonsai you can individually wrap them in fleece.
Take a close look at stored Bonsai, check for pests, and fungus and other over wintering creatures. Spraying with a Winter Wash if necessary. Identify which Bonsai need re-potting, and make a not eof pot sizes, styles, and colours athat are suited for the individual tree. Bonsai Pots have now started to reappear in the Market, stock up now.
