Bonsai Course for Beginners (October 2022)

The Bonsai Beginners Course is the most popular bonsai course we have run over the last 15 years. This intensive bonsai tree course concentrates a vast amount of learning and techniques into a single day. While this course is targeted at beginners, even more experienced enthusiasts find it a learning experience. Very satisfying. Just remember that you will have to contend with lots of learning, both theoretical and practical. 

The course has three modules, covering the following topics.

101: Bonsai Tree Basic Intro and Care 

After introducing Bonsai's origins and history, we will explore bonsai styles and some common bonsai species.  We will then get to our nine-point system on managing and caring for your Bonsai. Finally, you will study the basics of where to locate your Bonsai, how to water, feeding Bonsai and other housekeeping tasks that need to be undertaken to ensure a healthy, vibrant bonsai.

102: Bonsai Tree Pruning

Bonsai is a living, growing and transient art form and has to be continuously managed and cared for from day to day from week to week and season to season. To maintain the bonsai miniature size, one has to prune Bonsai constantly. This module introduces bonsai pruning and will cover when, how and what to prune.

103: Bonsai Tree Repotting

Bonsai are grown in a small container with a limited amount of soil, which needs to be replenished from time to time. This module teaches how to recognise if a bonsai needs repotting and how to report it. Introductory soil science, repotting techniques and methodologies are covered to ensure that you have successful stress-free repotting.

Delivery:

Each module will have a taught and a hands-on segment, a science and a techniques segment. The segments will help you respond to and even anticipate the needs of your Bonsai. Thus, you ensure that they can enjoy a long, healthy, and fruitful existence with you. 

Dates and Times

The Beginners Bonsai Course starts at 10 am and ends around 5 pm.

Course Fees

The Beginners Bonsai Course Fees is £150. In addition, you pay a non-refundable booking fee of £75 at the time of booking and the balance of £75 on the day you attend the course.

General Information

Tea and Coffees will be available throughout the day. Please bring a packed lunch; there will be a short break between morning and afternoon sessions.  We will be working both indoors and outdoors in the nursery, and London weather can be very changeable, so please be prepared; I find that layers help.

After the Beginners Course

You are encouraged to attend our varied and frequent workshops, which will help you build up your bonsai skill and confidence.  Join our Online Forum, where you can ask questions and learn from fellow students past and present and other enthusiasts. Finally, visit our Blog, which has a database of Species of Plants that you can grow as Bonsai.
